Codes of practice lay down agreed principles, processes and practices that must be followed by the organisations developing and delivering accredited qualifications. The regulators work with awarding organisations to make sure that codes are clear, precise and practical.
The codes ensure that all candidates are treated fairly, irrespective of the qualification they are taking, the awarding organisation that is delivering the qualification, or when they are assessed. By providing a basis for high standards in all aspects of the assessment process, the codes make an important contribution to maintaining public confidence in qualifications.
The regulators in England (Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, Ofqual), Wales (Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills; DCELLS) and Northern Ireland (Northern Ireland Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment; CCEA) produce this code to promote quality, consistency, accuracy and fairness in assessment and awarding. It helps maintain standards, both within and between awarding organisations and from year to year. The code lays down agreed principles, processes and practices for the awarding organisations that develop and deliver these qualifications.
The code is reviewed regularly to ensure that it remains up to date and fit for purpose. This version replaces the April 2010 version.
