A timeline detailing the introduction of changes to GCSEs is shown below.

First teaching of new two-year linear GCSE courses of study for qualifications in June 2014. First teaching of new GCSE geography qualifications. |

| November 2012 | GCSE units available as in November 2011 but entry restricted to students entering awards no later than autumn 2013.* |
| January 2013 | GCSE units available as in January 2012 but entry restricted to students entering awards no later than autumn 2013.* External assessments for English literature, geography, history and religious studies will include additional marks for spelling, punctuation and the accurate use of grammar. |
