E-Assessment

Our regulations require awarding organisations to ensure that all methods of e-assessment – including marking and awarding – are secure and fair. Results must be reliable and consistent, with no difference in the standards of assessments whether they are completed on-screen, online, or offline using pen and paper.
On-screen assessments are completed on a computer, but, unlike online assessments, no Internet connection is required.
In addition to taking multiple choice examinations online, learners can create and manage their e-portfolios over the Internet. Awarding organisations often mark and award assessments online as well.
To provide guidance for awarding organisations making use of technology for assessment, we have set out our regulatory principles for e-assessment .
We also support efutures – a dedicated website about e-assessment – which offers an e-assessment toolkit and has a number of case studies showing how e-assessment is being used in practice.
In 2009/10 the qualifications regulators for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, asked awarding organisations their views on the Regulatory Principles for e-assessment. The results of the RPeA survey are available to download.
Case studies of using e-assessment were also submitted by awarding organisations and can be viewed below:
