General data
General dataset
Five awarding organisations (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, CCEA and WJEC/CBAC) submit data to Ofqual through the Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) twice a year, covering the summer and winter series of GCSE and GCE qualifications. This dataset contains the data, by qualification, for the last two years.
We are currently processing further data, and when available this dataset will be revised to contain data for the last five years.
The following dataset is available to download:
General Qualifications, England, 2009 to 2010 (XLS)
Please note: The General Qualifications dataset is currently unavailable due to changes we are making to the data and the inclusion of the final results for Summer 2010 and Winter 2010.
We hope to be able to publish this by the end of July 2011.

Notes about the dataset
Geographical coverage: This dataset covers GCSE and GCE qualifications in England only.
Comparison with JCQ published provisional figures: The provisional figures published by JCQ only include results for students whose gender is specified as either male or female, whereas this dataset also includes results where the student’s gender is unknown. Furthermore JCQ’s published figures for England may include results from other UK regions whereas this dataset is restricted to English regions.
Provisional and Final data: In August each year JCQ releases provisional results for the summer GCSE and GCE examinations. Following this, some results are subject to enquiries and appeals. A final dataset, once all enquiries and appeals have been resolved, is produced in the middle of the following year.
Awards and Entries: The figures for Awards refer to the total number of pass grades for each qualification. The Entries figure includes U grades and absences.
Qualification type: All GCSE and GCE examinations are presented, including applied and short courses. Double awards are only counted once.
Revisions: Once released, data on the number of awards or entries are not usually subject to revision. Data may be revised if an error is identified.
